Campus Security
University of Kentucky
ABOUT
Anthany Beatty

As a result of the modernization of college campuses across the country, new security measures have been implemented to accompany the new changes. As of 2014, “student-reported violent victimization crimes have decreased 75% since 2005” (Office for Victims of Crime 1). This is due to a variety of security measures set in place for students and faculty, such as blue light phones, additional security cameras, a larger police presence, and a number of other safety methods. For example, Penn State’s blue light phones prevented a potential sexual assault when the cameras were able to track down a man that was attempting to follow a woman into her dorm (Marino 2015). These blue lights stations are easily spotted at night and provide someone in need with a help button and a direct line to the police (Marino 2015). While many people complain about the resources spent on the blue lights and claim that they don't seem to offer much more than increased lighting at night, campuses have decided to keep these blue lights as a safeguard in the event that other main types of communication are not currently available. In addition to these blue lights, many campuses have and encourage the use of their own cell phone safety apps. These not only provide safety tips and information, but can also put you in direct contact with the police if need be. These two safety measures are among the multitudes that campuses use for the increased safety of their students and faculty.
