Effect

The role that safety and security plays at The University of Kentucky is very significant. This can easily be overlooked as safety and security measures are everywhere on campus, be it from police presence, security cameras, or keycard access to certain buildings and doors. The effect that all of these things have on the community of U.K. is a sense of safety and personal security. Many measures have been taken over the years to provide that feeling of safety, and these efforts are demonstrated by the positive opinions about campus security from students.

Survey Regarding Campus Safety

Cameron said that during the day, he felt very safe walking to and from classes and pretty safe around campus during the evening. He says that the blue lights on campus give him a good sense of security during evening hours. He hasn’t taken advantage of any of UK’s safety initiatives for students and feels security on campus is great.

Layne feels very safe on campus. During the evening, while she feels safe, she says she wouldn't want to be alone. The blue lights and seeing the UK police patrolling makes her feel safe while she would like to see a higher presence of police throughout campus. Layne has not taken advantage of any of UK’s security initiatives.

Emma says she feels completely safe on campus during the day while she doesn’t feel as safe during the night if  she’s not walking with someone. She recalled seeing more police around campus at the beginning of the year but as the year has gone on she hasn’t seen them as much. She would like to see the campus police around campus and little more. Emma uses the LIveSafe app while she is walking on campus during the evening so it can track her while she walks. She has also ridden the ROTC SAFECATS golf carts from time to time.

Tyler feels just as safe during the evening as he does during the day. He says that there is usually always people around while he’s out on campus so he feels safe either way. Feeling as safe as he does, he doesn’t have any ideas on how to improve campus security and he hasn’t used any of UK’s security initiatives.
